                        Kaige's New Year's Musings

Here we sit as the calendar flips once again, closing out one year and
beginning another. It's resolution time, self-evaluation time and for
many, time to beat yourself up over what didn't get done last year.

I was going to sit down and do a comparison of what I said I wanted to
accomplish this past year (in Legend terms) and decided that wouldn't
be as productive as looking at what I wrote and see to keep working on
and improving on those goals.

It's all about baby steps. As long as there is forward momentum and
there is a feeling of accomplishment, we're all better off than we
were before or would have been if nothing had been done.

While I'll never get as much as I want done (I have way too many
interests and too many ideas for that ever to be feasible), I do think
some of the steps that the immortal staff has taken in the past year
have made positive differences in the LegendMUD community.

By getting the logs of the Q&A sessions up on the web in a timely
manner, everyone can see what the current concerns are. By including
the recent update information in the LTs, everyone can see what
changes are taking place. By including a space for an RP board in the
new OOC Coffee Shop, people who are interested in it can connect with
others. By enforcing rules, while not always the most popular job, the
atmosphere is much more enjoyable for all. By fixing what are
nuisances and minor bugs as well as some of the less visible but more
stability threatening memory bugs, the foundations for future code
improvements and expansions are strengthened. By updating existing
areas and featuring each era during the Summer Odyssey, we learn a bit
more about the world we gather in and find some new depths to explore.

There have been plenty more things along similar lines (unfortunately
not enough room to list them all) that have helped keep this place
running smoothly and have helped improve things for everyone who is a
part of LegendMUD.

The Annual Expies are on the horizon and I hope you'll take the time
to help make them a success by participating in the nomination and
final balloting processes as well as by joining us for our Eighth
Anniversary celebrations. The back issues of the LT are a great way to
refresh the events and changes of the past year.

In addition to thinking about the Expies, the question that I am
tossing out to everyone this year, is not what are your resolutions,
but what steps forward are you going to take this coming year?

Congratulations to The Hermetics, The Secretives, and The Grand Coven of
Legend. These clans will all celebrate the 4th year of their (re)founding on
January 15th.

The Assassin's Guild disbanded due to low membership. The Rune Knights were
disbanded by Asguard.

There are currently 19 RP clans and 10 PK clans. This leaves space for 3 more
clans to form. For more information on the clan system, read 'help clan' and
see the clan information list via the 'clans' command.

Taffy's Gide to Kiling Gnomes by Taffy Sillitoe

     Chapter 1: finding the litle boogers

     Finding gnomes is the hardest part of beeing Sworn Protektris of dee
Lehensfrows Shoos. The gnome yoo dont see may bee the won that gits yoor
shoo. Gnomes ar sneeky. Tha like too hide and preetend too bee horzes or
bunnies or tables or peepel. I am not so klever as sum peepel but I am very
very very good at spoting sneeky gnomes. I allways no, heer is how.

     1. Gnomes ware pointy red hats. Sumtimes thay have beerds. Sumtimes thay
are sneeky and don't.

     2. Gnomes allways hav beedy red iz. This is the best wa to spot them.
Sumtimes yoo have to look very hard or you cant see the iz when the gnome is
preetending too bee furnachur.

     3. Gnomes say meen things like "lern to spel, yoo ninkumpoop!" or "dont
tel enewon I tucht yoo" or "woodent yoo bee more kumfterbel in the
saloosumthing (I dont no the word!)?"

     5. Thay yooz big words I dont no.

                        The Fury of a Friend

Wandering the world, I decided to that it was time to visit the familiar town
of Tara. It'd been a while since I'd last been to the Celtic lands. I
wondered if Tika is still the same grouchy woman she was, or had she softened
up in her old age? Memories of the past came back as I made my way back
towards the familiar cross-roads, day-dreaming all the way. Who will be
there, I wonder? So many friends gone now, I wonder if I'll know anyone still
around...oh well, I'll just have to wait and see.

Coming to the cross-roads south of Tara, I started hearing shouts of what
sounded like a fight in the making. That's not unusual of the area I thought
to myself, but that sounded a lot like a very familiar voice.  Hearing, "Just
end it, Demonspawn -- I wish to be with my love forever" I knew it was not
just a little spat taking place, it was the voice of my closest friend and
mentor. It was the voice of Judah! Turning north at the crossroads, I started
to run towards Tara.

Stopping at the gates of the town to catch my breath and listen for where my
friend may be, I heard Judah say, "Even in death I will be far better off then
you will ever be demonspawn!" 

"You think so do you? You followers of Aslan can be so naive at times,"
replied the voice with a hint of mockery. "But if you wish it to end this way
so be it. Although my master and myself had much fun toying with you and your
followers, pity you would fold after all this time Judah."

"Enough with your games Soze, I do not fear death. Death for me here brings
me eternal happiness with my love Haley." 

"So be it, Judite." Soze replied with a cackle, and calling down lightning to
strike Judah -- the fight had begun!

Seeing the storm clouds and lightning strike around the Tara Inn I knew where
they were, after all this was not a cloudy day. I started to sprint again to
try and save my friend from the demon spawn, Soze. Coming around a corner I
watched as my old mentor fell to the ground. "NO!" Not even realizing I
screamed I bent down to see if there was a chance to save my friend. With a
flash of light, Soze had done something and we were all at the base of some
cliff. "No need to be near a healer." Soze's hateful laugh echoed off the
valley walls.

Looking into my eyes at the brink of death Judah whispered, "d-do not....let
hate...consume you...f-friend." The cold look of death filled Judah's eyes. I
wept.

Hearing the soft cackle of a spineless pathetic worm of a man behind me, I
could not help but let the rage consume me. "You will die demonspawn!" With
sudden rage I didn't even realize was there I unleashed fury on this....this
thing that appears as a man, not stopping until I was sure he was dead. For
some reason I was not surprised to see his master send his dilapidated body
back to continue his business as a pawn for the underworld. Without a
thought, I attacked him again, sending him back to the underworld where he
belongs.

The cold voice came back again. "Go ahead Vagabond -- you're doing far better
work for my master then even I was doing. My master just loves death.  Kill
me again -- perhaps we'll be partners working for my master," Soze
snickered.

"I'll never work for that coward." I said. "You go back now to hide under the
heel of your master's boot. Tell him that all like him have made a new enemy
today. Tell him that those working for the underworld will be hunted and
destroyed. Go now and beware for when you see me in the future you'll not
longer see the once care free 'Silver-haired Guitarist'. You'll now see....

                Dias Spirals Into Insanity and Beyond

He was happy, was being the key word -- all things must end. Years of
struggling brought him to Devi, pain and frustration all giving way for her,
letting in love, something he had never before experienced. He was bred,
born, raised, and trained to kill, it was his life, it was his heritage, it
was his legacy.  That destiny pulled them apart, tore him apart.  Devi left
him not long after they had met, leaving him lost and empty inside.

The spiral began, insanity slowly taking, its grip on him tearing at his mind
and rending his soul.  Every meeting with her was more pain, he couldn't
handle it much longer, he just wanted to die, so die he did. He jumped Stain,
Reaper, everyone he could find, trying to die.

Then the announcement came, Devi was to marry Vidar.  The insanity finally
took full control, and now it's all he has to hold on to.
